Suomenlinna is one of the biggest sea fortresses in the world, founded in 1748 and built by Field Marshal Count Augustin Ehrensvärd on islands off the coast of Helsinki. Suomenlinna remains as one of the most popular attractions in Finland and was included in UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 as a unique monument to European military architecture. An important part of any visit to Suomenlinna is a good meal or a refreshing break at one of its cafés. The fortress has a selection of restaurants and charming cafés. Suomenlinna Museum is situated in the old navy inventory chambers, which were built in the early 1780s. The permanent exhibition presents the construction of the fortress and the eventful history of the islands from the 18th century to the present day. The visitors can get to know the life of Swedish officers, Russian merchants as well as Finnish civil war prisoners, who all lived in the fortress. The museum also features temporary exhibitions and information about UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The wide-screen show Suomenlinna Experience offers spectators an excursion to the absorbing history of Suomenlinna. The show starts every 30 minutes. The Suomenlinna Visitor Centre hosts also the Suomenlinna Tourist Information.
